Shear strength can be established in the laboratory or in the field, and the two are not interchangeable. Our direct shear machines run prepared specimens under controlled normal stress on the bench, while the field inspection vane shear tester reads undrained shear strength on cohesive soils directly in the trial pit, which is faster but gives you a different number for different reasons. 

For pavement design, CBR test machines cover California Bearing Ratio determination in manual and automatic configurations. CBR procedure requires moisture content determination, so a laboratory drying oven is part of the same setup, and compacted specimens need a hand-operated extruder to come out of the mould intact. 

Particle size classification runs through test sieves and sieve shakers, typically after oven drying to constant mass.
